Argentina's Ambassador on the Importance of the Mercosur-EU Agreement

Buenos Aires, February 27 (NA) - The new ambassador to the European Union, Fernando Iglesias, stated this Friday that the Mercosur agreement with this regional bloc 'is going to put sectors in a position to compete, invest, and modernize'. Following the Senate vote on the slate that granted him responsibility as ambassador to the European Union, Iglesias asserted that 'the agreement is a fundamental issue of the policy of the Argentine Republic'. 'It is great news, and I believe it will be a turning point for Argentine economy and geopolitics,' he added. The former deputy became Argentina's ambassador to the European Union after the Senate approved his nomination on Wednesday. In statements to Radio Rivadavia, he affirmed that 'the fact that it was approved with such a majority in the Senate demonstrates a change in the conception of an Argentina that must be more integrated into the world, increasingly participating in the global value chains and moving away from protectionism'. 'The benefits will be very great for many sectors, and in no way will they be problematic for the two most dissatisfied, backward, and protected sectors, which are the Argentine and Mercosurian manufacturing industry and the European agricultural sector. And I believe it will put them in a position to compete, invest, and modernize,' he concluded.
