Argentina Sends EU-Mercosur Trade Deal to Congress

The Argentine government has sent the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union to the Chamber of Deputies for ratification. This move is a concrete political signal that Argentina wants to be a reliable partner, expand markets, attract investment, and generate genuine employment. The agreement, signed on January 17th in Asunción, Paraguay, eliminates tariffs for over 90% of Mercosur's exports and reduces access barriers for European industrial and technological goods. The initiative consists of 5,000 pages translated into several languages. However, the agreement cannot yet be implemented because the European Parliament decided to have it reviewed by the Court of Justice of the European Union, a process that could take months or even up to two years. Argentina, along with other Mercosur nations, faces significant challenges but also a historic opportunity. As Deputy Juliana Santillán emphasized, this is a chance to 'reintegrate into the world with predictability, clear rules, and a long-term strategic vision'. On Wednesday, two commissions were formed to review the initiative before its vote in the Chamber of Deputies on Thursday. Santillán, who will chair the Foreign Affairs Commission, stated her commitment to conduct the work with dialogue, respect, and a strong institutional spirit.
