Buenos Aires, January 8 (NA) — The head of the National Federation of University Teachers (CONADU), Clara Chevalier, stated that salaries in the sector are among the lowest since the restoration of democracy in Argentina, and said that some do not exceed 500,000 pesos monthly. For the leader, according to what the Argentine News Agency could learn, the salaries of the university sector «do not cover basic expenses such as rent and food». Chevalier said that this situation not only reflects a deterioration in purchasing power but «a breakdown of the historical consensus on the importance of investing in public education as a state policy». She highlighted that many teachers today earn less than half a million pesos monthly, a figure that, in real terms, is not enough to guarantee minimum living conditions. «We are facing a government that comes to break with the consensus that a country must invest in education and undermines the foundations of the idea of the Argentine Nation-State», she emphasized. The union leader expressed that «under the argument that 'there is no money', the government cuts the basic functions of the state such as education. There are university teachers who cannot cover rent or food», she added. Chevalier assured that «there is a persecution of the University and Science, which has a non-economic component, but a purely ideological confrontation».
