Argentina: New Rules for the Natural Gas Market

Argentina's Ministry of Energy has issued a resolution allowing gas producers to cede their volumes to electricity generators. This step aims to decentralize the market and boost competition in fuel supply.

Argentina: New Rules for the Natural Gas Market

Buenos Aires, December 10 (NA) – The Secretariat of Energy has established the conditions for natural gas producers participating in the GasAr Plan to withdraw committed volumes and cede them to electricity generators, marking another step towards the decentralization of the energy market.

Resolution 501/2025, signed by Secretary María Carmen Tettamanti, allows producers to request the Compañía Administradora del Mercado Eléctrico Mayorista (CAMMESA) to cede their contractual position to a generating agent, who will operate with that fuel under a self-management scheme.

According to what the Argentine News Agency was able to learn, generating units that use the gas withdrawn through an agreement with a producer will be dispatched according to the declared Variable Production Cost, with a range that can oscillate between 75 and 100 percent of the reference price of the so-called 'Agreement Gas'.

The regulation establishes that the minimum contractual volume commitments of the GasAr Plan will be maintained and that the producer's option to withdraw is irrevocable.

This measure is framed within the process of normalization of the Wholesale Electricity Market, ordered by Resolution 400/2025, which seeks to advance towards a scheme of greater competition in the supply of fuels for thermal generation.
