The government announced a reduction in import tariffs on 14 categories of toys, including tricycles, dolls, skateboards, and building blocks for children. This measure aims to increase competition and encourage a decrease in high local prices ahead of the Christmas season. According to the Argentine News Agency, the tariffs are being reduced from 35% to 20%, aligning them with the MERCOSUR level. This decision reverses an arbitrary increase that had been in place for 13 years.
The measure is justified by regional comparison, which establishes that Argentina is the country with the most expensive toys on the subcontinent. The price difference is abysmal compared to Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Colombia.
Quote: «Transformable Doll: The same model of an international franchise that costs $60,000 in Argentina is sold for only $15,000 in Mexico (75% cheaper) and for $20,000 in Brazil and Chile (67% cheaper)».
Building Blocks: A model that can be obtained for $50,000 in Argentina costs up to 50% less ($25,000) in Chile and Mexico.
Dolls: The same product that sells for $50,000 in the country can be found for $35,000 in Brazil (30% cheaper).
Child's Skates: A similar model that costs $87,000 in Argentina is found for $50,000 in the region (42.5% cheaper).
The tariff reduction aims to have the increased international supply pressure local prices down before year-end purchases.
