Argentina Increases Bus Fares

The Argentine government has decided to increase bus fares in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA). This decision was made by Economy Minister Luis Caputo as part of the need to 'reduce subsidies for public road transport and continue cutting public spending'. According to the new resolution, the minimum fare for buses entering and leaving the City of Buenos Aires will rise to 495 pesos (+9.7%). The new fares for AMBA will be as follows: the 0 to 3 km stretch (first section) will increase from 451.01 pesos to 495 pesos; the 3 to 6 km stretch (second section) from 502.43 pesos to 551 pesos; the 6 to 12 km stretch (third section) from 541.13 pesos to 594 pesos; the 12 to 27 km stretch (fourth section) from 579.87 pesos to 636 pesos; and finally, the over 27 km stretch (fifth section) will increase from 618.35 pesos to 678 pesos. Historically, public road transport in AMBA was regulated by the Nation. However, the government of Javier Milei transferred the responsibilities for lines operating only within the City of Buenos Aires and the province to Jorge Macri and Axel Kicillof. Consequently, they have decoupled the fares and are increasing them monthly by 2% plus the previous month's inflation.
