A man from Buenos Aires has been sentenced to one year in prison for his role in a scam targeting a woman. The woman had been contacted by a supposed Polish citizen, with whom she exchanged emails and maintained a relationship.
The man, a resident of Buenos Aires, must also adhere to rules of conduct for a period of two years. According to the Argentine News Agency (NA), the sentence was handed down by the Correctional Court No. 2 of the Bahía Blanca Judicial Department, presided over by Judge Susana González La Riva.
The crime occurred between November 2019 and January 2020, when a scheme was orchestrated to defraud the woman through a person of Polish origin who began contacting the victim and, over time, established a virtual relationship. The man told the woman he would send her a suitcase with gifts from abroad and would later travel to Argentina.
On January 6, 2020, the victim received an email from a supposed foreign courier company stating that the package sent by the man would arrive two days later. Subsequently, she was contacted and told that the package contained valuable items and that to release it from Mexican customs, she needed to transfer money to a Banco Galicia account in the name of Blanco. The victim then made three money transfers totaling 112,600, 3,100, and 308,000 pesos.
Through the investigation, it was determined that Blanco received the money, made no report denying the transfers, and withdrew the cash via the bank counter and ATMs.
Additionally, the accused has pending cases in which he will soon be tried in the Federal Capital for two similar incidents.
