Argentine Railways (Trenes Argentinos) will carry out major repair works on the Mitre line, which will directly affect passengers of the Tigre branch. Once completed, the positive impact of the works will benefit users of the Tigre branch, as well as residents of Tigre, San Fernando, San Isidro, Vicente López, and Buenos Aires. Thus, passengers will have a better service with improved safety and more frequent trains.
Meanwhile, the J. L. Suárez and Bartolomé Mitre branches will only operate between Belgrano R and their respective terminals, not reaching Retiro station. This will affect more than 50,000 daily passengers, who will have to reschedule their trips and seek alternative transportation during the long weekend.
The works will be concentrated in the areas of Núñez and Carupá, where renovation of tracks, culverts, and signaling systems at the entrance to Retiro will be carried out. These interventions are part of an integral track renovation plan, initiated in February 2024, which has already completed 18 kilometers of conditioning and plans to renovate 40 kilometers in total, plus 47 more of third rail and 65 bridges or culverts.
But these are not the only planned tasks, as they also include the intervention of 24 level crossings, 22 pedestrian crossings, replacement of 4 bumpers in Tigre, and renovation of 23 track switches. With these modernization works, the purpose is to reduce delays, cancel deteriorated sections, and increase safety, as the current structures are over 40 years old.
For this reason, Trenes Argentinos scheduled the works during the long weekend to minimize the impact on users. Therefore, during the aforementioned days, the Tigre branch will be completely interrupted. More than 50,000 users will be affected, but they will benefit from the modernization works.
These are important works to improve the safety of workers and passengers, taking advantage of the long weekend in November, the Mitre train will suspend its service to carry out the necessary tasks. Thus, from Friday, November 21, to Monday, November 24, inclusive, the Tigre branch will be interrupted, as it will host works considered "indispensable for guaranteeing operational safety".
Therefore, Trenes Argentinos invites the public to stay informed about service updates on its official website or app. This allows to shorten work times by up to 70%, compared to the usual nocturnal modality. The tasks will be concentrated in the areas of Núñez and Carupá.
Although it also affects citizens of Buenos Aires, on the other side of the General Paz highway, the train is one of the most used public transport means by millions of people in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. Therefore, the news of a branch shutdown forces users to reschedule their itineraries to reach their destination.
The measure is necessary as it is temporary. In this regard, according to official sources, the deteriorated sleepers and rails generate more than 40 sectors with precautionary speed, which causes constant cancellations and delays. Hence the urgency of intervening in critical areas to recover service regularity.
Although most of the works are carried out at night to not affect passengers, there are difficult-to-access sectors and long stretches that require longer suspensions. This intervention is key within the Railway Emergency Plan decreed by the National Government, in the search for the modernization of the system's infrastructure.
