The Libertad Foundation conducted a study on the cost of registering a car in various provinces of Argentina. In the ranking of the most expensive car registrations in the country, it stands out that having a car in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires implies an annual expense of 1 million pesos, considering only the value of that tax. This analysis was based on the annual amount that a Peugeot 208, the most registered car in Argentina in 2024, has to pay in each jurisdiction.
The province of Buenos Aires tops the list as the most expensive, with an annual amount of 1,146,909 pesos for the registration of a Peugeot 208, representing 4.72% of the vehicle's list price. Next is the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires with 989,171 pesos per year, equivalent to 4.07% of the car's value. In third place is the province of Río Negro, with a cost of 851,200 pesos annually, which would be 3.5% of the car's list price.
On the other hand, at the opposite end is Chaco, where the cost of registering a car is significantly lower, only 145,771 pesos per year, which represents 0.6% of the vehicle's list price. In comparison, in the state of Florida, United States, the same procedure costs 35 dollars per year, much lower than the 960 dollars that must be paid in the province of Buenos Aires.
The Libertad Foundation pointed out that the motor vehicle tax in Argentina is excessive and that the provinces should be more considered in fiscal terms. This study reveals the large disparities in the costs of registering a car in different regions of the country, reaching differences of up to 27 times more compared to the United States.
