IMF and Argentina Progress Negotiations for Funding

The Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Gita Gopinath, virtually met today with the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, and the President of the Central Bank, Santiago Bausili, to advance an agreement. The expectation of fresh fund disbursement for Argentina from the IMF has sparked impatience in the markets, making this contact even more relevant.

In previous days, there had been other conversations between Javier Milei and Kristalina Georgieva, as well as between Caputo and the U.S. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent. Gopinath expressed that positive progress is being made in negotiations for a new program backed by the Fund, aimed at improving stability and growth in Argentina.

For his part, Caputo thanked Gopinath and her team. Meanwhile, the Minister of Economy is in Buenos Aires, and Bausili is still in Cape Town, South Africa, for the G20 summit of ministers and central bankers. The Argentine government seeks to reach a new agreement in the coming weeks, for which it is crucial to define various aspects of the upcoming financial program and its conditionalities, especially regarding the exchange rate scheme to be implemented.

The possibility of IMF support of around USD 11 billion has been raised, as mentioned by Milei. Caputo has already confirmed that the results of the technical agreement will be sent to Congress for approval. All of this is framed in the goal of achieving economic stability and promoting growth in Argentina.
