President Javier Milei had a 'warm' phone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, according to official sources. During the call, the leaders discussed issues related to the bilateral relationship and the peace process between Ukraine and Russia. Milei expressed his gratitude for Zelensky's solidarity in the tragedy in Bahía Blanca, according to the Presidency.
The conversation between the presidents took place after the Argentine government recently changed its international stance by abstaining from supporting a resolution in the United Nations Assembly that urged Russia to withdraw its military forces from Ukraine unconditionally. Despite the known bond between Milei and Zelensky, the Argentine Foreign Ministry was forced to adjust its foreign policy to maintain closeness with Washington.
The UN resolution, supported by European countries, reaffirmed the commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and was approved with 93 votes in favor, 18 against, and 65 abstentions. The administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump marked a significant change in the stance regarding the Ukraine-Russia conflict, distancing itself from Ukraine and criticizing Zelensky for not calling elections last year.
On the other hand, Trump sought to get closer to Russian President Vladimir Putin, aiming to negotiate a solution to the conflict given the economic burden it implies for Washington to continue supporting Ukraine in the war. This situation surprised Milei's administration, which had maintained a supportive stance towards Ukraine and now sees how its main international ally, the United States, changes its approach with Trump's return to power.
