Bahía Blanca Declares Mourning After Deadly Storm

On Sunday night, at 7:30 PM, the mayor of Bahía Blanca, Federico Susbielles, reported that the army was able to mobilize quickly with trucks and barges to assist families affected by a severe storm that left 15 dead in the city. Susbielles declared a municipal mourning period of 72 hours for the tragedy that impacted the region.

The official described the magnitude of the storm, detailing that 400 millimeters of rain fell, almost the typical annual amount of precipitation in Bahía Blanca. He pointed out that road damage was severe and most bridges were destroyed, leaving only one point of passage. A donation alias was enabled for sending funds to assist with social aid to those affected.

The requested aid includes non-perishable food, cleaning products, drinking water, clothing and warm items, mattresses, among others. Regarding the operational situation, it was indicated that at 10:00 AM, much of the operation was interrupted due to the saturation of channels and streams in the city.

To address the emergency, the municipality has deployed a significant operation with more than 400 workers in the streets, facing considerable difficulties. The safety and well-being of citizens have been prioritized, with the evacuation of affected areas and assistance to homes and medical care centers. Despite the challenges, electrical power has been maintained at 55% of the city and efforts are ongoing to normalize services.

The mayor expressed his solidarity with the victims and their families, describing the situation as dramatic and painful. He highlighted the work of the authorities and emergency teams who have worked tirelessly to provide support amid the catastrophe. In the framework of reconstruction and assistance to the affected, the city of Bahía Blanca continues in a recovery process after the devastating storm.
