Argentine Mining Dispute Taken to International Level

Residents of the Argentine city of Andalgalá have achieved international attention for their 15-year dispute with a mining company. In response to a complaint about systematic human rights violations linked to the Agua Rica mining project, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has approached the Argentine government. This means that the authorities of Catamarca province can no longer make decisions regarding the project, and all responsibility will fall on the national government. Residents will now litigate not with the province, but directly with Argentina's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Commission has also ordered the Catamarca government not to issue new permits for mining activities. In turn, Andalgalá residents have vowed not to stop their protests, including weekly marches for water and environmental conservation. They claim that over the years, they have faced repression, arbitrary detentions, and legal persecution. The residents' lawyers emphasize that their struggle combines street action with legal battles, expressing hope that international pressure will finally lead to justice.
